Local Heroes Awards 2018

On Wednesday 23 October the recipients of the annual Local Heroes Awards were unmasked at the Stretton Centre in Munno Para.

The Local Heroes Awards recognise individuals who have made a difference in the local community. Congratulations to the following 2019 winners:

Positive Playford Award – Adult, sponsored by Lighthouse Disability, was awarded to Jasmine Brouwers. Jasmine is a volunteer with Uniting Communities’ Families by Families  Program. The program provides support to assist stressed families to get through tough times and help fill a gap in crisis services.

Positive Playford Award – Youth, sponsored by Boral, was awarded to Gemma Phillis. Gemma is a volunteer for the Children’s University Australasia, a role model for young people and assists in local schools to gain experience whilst completing a Bachelor of Education (Primary) at UniSA.

Business Award, sponsored by Rivergum Homes, was awarded to two winners, Indulge Your Beauty and Yourtown. Cassie Williams started Indulge Your Beauty as a home-based beauty salon and grew from a sole trader to a small business with a team of seven. Yourtown is a national organisation, providing a range of services for young people and families seeking support, particularly to assist those at risk of disadvantage.

Best Training or Engagement Initiative Program, sponsored by T&J Constructions, was awarded to the NDIS Disability Enterprise Project. The City of Playford, the Independent Institute, Barkuma and Uniting SA collaborated to deliver this innovative project. The partners delivered a tailored hospitality training program to people with a disability.

Best Training-to-Employment- Individual Outcome, sponsored by Alexander Symonds, was awarded to Rhianon Mcbryde-Rousseff. Rhianon completed a Certificate II in Civil Construction and moved into employment at LR&M, enabling her to undertake further study in a Certificate III. Rhianon was a standout participant during her training program. She developed into a group leader, showing initiative and helping other students and demonstrated good planning and problem-solving skills.
